The needle is quickly leaning towards “I need a new car” as opposed to a few months ago when it was “I want a new car.” There’s a host of nagging issues with the Si, some a smidge more serious than others, that are starting to show.
So, I turn to you all for opinions, suggestions, and etc for my next car.
Requirements: 4 doors preferred, though I’ll stick with a coupe if it has a semi reasonable back seat. Also, can I get a sport trim if we go the sedan route, I want to still feel like I’m 24 and not 30 with kids and an Optima driving them to school. No trucks, SUVs, crossovers, or wagons (don’t hurt me please).
Financial: 30k OTD or less
New, used or CPO: doesn’t matter to me, just no buying from your local “Buy here, pay here lot”
Make/model: doesn’t really matter, open to really anything as I’ve only owned acura/honda cars before
What I’ve looked at so far online : 2018 Honda Accord Sport, CPO Acura TLX SH-AWD, 2018 Civic Si Sedan, 2014-2016 Q50s, 2017+ BRZ’s w/performance pack, 2017+ Toyota GT86, 2014+ Volvo S60 R’s, 2015+ Nissan 370z’s
Location: I’m in NJ, no issue going as far north as CT or as south as Delaware, no issue staying in the tri state...Ideally I’d like to not have to use my company to transport a car to my home.

Check on something like a 2015-2017 Honda Accord Coupe V6 MT.
Just an example for all of Oppo to notice:

Used 335ixDrive, $29,950 Sure it’s no E46 or E90 in terms of feel but it is a great all rounder car. The N55 is no slouch and it’s comfortable as well. This one is CPO so you get 6 year 100K mile limited warranty. Clean Carfax
OR
Audi S4, $28,950 you’ll get the older model with the Supercharged V6, Clean Carfax 33K miles
OR A top trim limited WRX is another good option. Bonus for Manual.

You could try the Hyundai Genesis 3.8 but it’s really not as sporty as these three. More of a relaxed cruiser. But it’s loaded with features.

Subaru wrx premium.

I’m biased since I own one , bu t I recommend the 2018 Civic Si. It’s a great all-around vehicle that is very affordable, reliable, spacious, efficient, and fun.
I also didn’t see GTI on your list. Any particular reason why? You have no wagons on your list, not sure if that also excludes hatchbacks. But the GTI is a truly fantastic vehicle as well.
Admittedly, I am in my early 30's with a kid, so I’ve become far more rationally minded and instantly tend to exclude 2 door cars and pure sports cars as a result (as a daily driver, at least), but the Si and GTI are both good enough for anyone in nearly any situation.

Am I doing this right? I think for $30,000 I’d be tempted to buy a late run 221 S550.

Under 30k
Usable backseat
Not a Honda...
Boom.

I don’t understand how/ why ‘ send it’ has gone from extreme sports to car buying. It’s perplexing.

Accord Sport MT seems like the perfect sweet spot for you. Will last foreverrrrr
Great price / mileage / interior feel / manual / retention value / low maintenance costs / etc etc etc

Lol I just think of it as doing something irresponsible. I’m not ballsy enough for extreme sports so ogling old AMGs online is the closest I’ll ever get.

If you’d like new and a 6 speed manual and I see Accord Sport in your list, I’d suggest test driving the Sport model with both 1.5 and 2.0.
My only issue (so far) is the road / tire nois e in the rear passenger seat, because th at’s where I have always been in my co-worker’s 18' A ccord. It may not be an issue to you.

Used e92 M3, used f30 335i m-sport, new WRX, used 535i m-sport.
Those are all sub-30 and will be reasonably fun cars. The 535i I threw in since it’s also in your budget but may not be as sporty as you like. However, it is reliable and could be a fun car to modify into a lowered sports sedan if you want.

Camry coupe, drooooolllllll.......
![]() 10/18/2018 at 11:55 |

i mean if you have 25 of them at least one will run at any given time, they will collectively be extremely reliable.

true dat
but they will probably all run.... old pandas are bullitproof little bastards
the floor may rust out tho... also the clips holding the seat on its rail will probably fail sooner or later :p

I want to try (keyword) and get away from Honda.
GTI’s scare me cause VW..and everyone I’ce ever seen owned by my peers has been a headache. (Co workers GTI is currently dead in my lot)

Without if you’re me. The stigma of a car doesn’t bother me. I’m not going to balk at a good car just because it’s driven primarily by d bags. You could go GTi for a “softer experience” and get plugs, a beanie, a flannel shirt, thick rimmed black glasses...
Seriously though, either is a great choice. I’ve owned a WRX, and an STi. They are so fun to drive even my mom got a ticket in my STi. I’ve driven a ton of GTI’s but the closest that I’ve come to ownership is the S3. They’re more comfortable than the Subaru and definitely “nicer”. The WRX/STi takes the cake on fun though. Every time I drive one, I’m like “Sheeeeeeeeit, I forgot how fun these are”

I’ve come to realize that I drive like a dick no matter what I’m in, so I went ahead and bought a BMW

Fair enough. You could probably find a newer E550 for that price too, apparently they’re pretty stout cars.

haha well played. A re you from NJ? T here is a radio station called 95.9 the wrat.

I am from jersey but I usually listen to 92.3 if I use the radio. I just picked 959 because Porsches are what got me into cars originally and I still love the 959.

What about a Golf R? It’s classified as a Golf for some insurance companies but it’s crazy fast. And practical!

Really? (To the insurance part)p
![]() 10/26/2018 at 00:26 |

Yep. There were some guys reporting their Golf Rs were getting marked as Golf TSi models on some insurance companies. I’m not sure if some companies caught onto that now though. I know AAA has caught on.
